Kitty

We think Lanier's new favorite word is Kitty Kat or atleast that is what it sounds like. Since we have 4 cats and lots of cat statues around its not surprising Kitty is the first real word.

Both girls have done the dada and mama, but Lanier will look at the cat and say kitty.

1 year Doctor Visit

Well we got the girls to the 1yr checkup.

Harlan was 18lbs around the 15%
Lanier was 20.7 lbs around the 35%

Both are doing good but still a little small but healthy

Teeth

Well we have a bunch of teeth now. Both girls have 4 teeth each and Lanier had her 4 first. Harlan was first with teeth but Lanier passed her with tooth number 3 and 4. Both girls find the teeth rather interesting and play with them with their tongues all the time.

I'll pull some pics and get them up this weekend.

Being a slacker

Sorry I haven't posted lately, I've been a bit busy with work. But I do have some pics and some news stories to put up. Since I'm not working on Friday, maybe I can get around to it.

ChickenPox the on going saga

Well on Monday Lanier went to the doctor as noted earlier, well today 11/2, Harlan went in, we believe her chickenpox had become infected, which turns out to be the case. As you can tell from the pictures posted earlier, Harlan had it far worse than Lanier did. So now Harlan is on antibiotics.

Also for Harlan's visit, the doctor had some of his fellow doctors come done, because they had never seen a live case of the chicken pox. They said since the vaccine has been out for 12 years now, that no one gets them anymore. Lucky us.

weights

Well while the gorls were at the doctor they both got weighed.

Harlan - 18lbs .6ozs
Lanier 20lbs 12ozs

we have chickenpox

Well we didn't make it until we could get the vaccine, missed it by 2 months. Both our girls have come down with chickenpox. We are about 4 days into it, so we have about a week left. Lanier got them first, but by the time we realized it was chickenpox, Harlan had them. It started on Friday (27th) for Laner, well a little before that with a small rash on her leg, but by Saturday she was nicely covered and Harlan had 2 or 3 bumps. Now both are getting more and more. Lanier more than Harlan.

They are both handling it well, but you can tell they are not feeling well. We took them to the doctor on Monday to verify the pox, and knowing there was nothing they could do, but we wanted to make sure that nothing new had come around.

Hopefully they will start getting better by this weekend.

I will be posting some pics in the next day or so of our dotted girls.

we have words

Well both girls now seem to be saying mama and dada. Now we just have to associate those with mama and dada. But this is a good first step so to speak.

Lanier's OT/PT

Well Lanier had her 9 month OT/PT visit. Everything seems to be going good and she is doing everything that she should be doing. The only slight concern is when she crawls she won't use her right leg. But they seem to think that it is a muscle development problem rather than a mental issue. So they gave us an exercise to work on making her right trunk muscles stronger and that should help out. So other than that and they weren't even too concerned with that, everything looks good.

We go back in December unless she has issues standing flat footed before then.

American Baby Faire

Well the family hit the annual baby fair in Atlanta this past weekend. We were looking forward to the baby crawl, which as it turns out, was not all it was cracked up to be. I'll get to that later.

The Baby Faire is in essence a big show of products and services that would be or could be useful to a family having a baby or having already had a baby. We got to talk to the fisher-price folks and see some new items that will be coming out. We got some info on some bottle nipples from Gerber. It wasn't as good as last year, but last year we had not yet had the girls, so it was all new to us.

Now this baby crawl event. Every hour they had a race, and the basic thing was, the baby could not get up and walk and the parents couldn't help. So in essence you had a bunch of babies ranging in age from our 9 month olds to at least a 13 month old. Well needless to say the older babies took off. Ours were doing ok until the announcer started in on his play by play and Harlan wanted to stop each time he talked to see what was going on. Now Lanier was fine until the first time she stopped. Then she turned to the right and took off. She went the distance, just sideways. Next year we are going to rack up with 18 month olds.

Lanier's Time for a tooth

Well it took a little while, but it loks like Lanier is ready to cut her first tooth. Over the last few days, we have noticed that you can feel a little sharp object in the gum. Now you can see the white of the tooth, but it has not yet broken through the skin. I would imagine that any day now it will bust through.

Contest Winners already

Well Dana happened to be in Walmart and they were running a little contest where people walking by voted on the prettiest babies, prize was a gift basket and I think a little outfit. More details coming later.

Well the way it worked was, Dana turned in a picture and over the next 30 minutes everyone walking by votes. Well their were like 6 or 7 other babies and our girls won with the most votes.

They then got called to the front of the baby section to be shown off to the crowd.

So now not only the family members but others also think we have pretty babies.

Tooth number 2 for Harlan

Well Harlan now has 2 teeth on the bottom. As soon as she will let us, we will try and get a pic of them to post.

Also, we are waiting on our pictures to come in from the July sitting we did at the university. Hopefully they will let us scan them in, so that I can post a couple here. We have also gotten some good video over the last few weeks and hopefully I will be able to get them uploaded, edited and post some of the more fun clips.

Dana may take the girls in this week or first of the next to get a weight check on the girls.

Lanier's OT/PT

Lanier had her latest OT/PT session on Thursday. We decided that I would take her and leave mom and Harlan at home. It seemed to work out well and Lanier really enjoyed her daddy one on one time. Afterwards we hit the store and did a little shopping, which she enjoyed.

As far as the session went, they said that she is right on track with her development and gave me some pointers to help her and Harlan. Both workers were amazed at how much she has grown in 3 months and thought she was the best little baby.

We have our next session in October.

Baby Boo-Boo

Well Harlan had her first boo-boo. In her attempt to learn to crawl, she managed to travel, slide, hop or some some versions there of to move about 4 feet. This move occurred as I was leaving the room and dana was going into the room.

What she managed to do was hit her hed on the fireplace right as Dana was reaching down for her. The bump was gone within a day and after a few minutes she didn't seem to notice. Nor did it change the way she is moving.

Here's a pic of the boo-boo, it's right in the center of her forehead

Eating like big girls

Well the girls are starting to get the hang of eating. We have tried a number of different stage 1 foods, they seem to like just about everything. We have gone through, pears, peaches, peas, carrots, green beans, squash and bananas. The only one I think they could do without was the butternut squash. I'll have to double check that since we have been through so many. So far, none have given them any issues.

On the sleep front, Harlan was doing so well, but she seems to have hit a new stage where she wants to be up more. While Lanier is hitting the stage where we think she will begin to sleep more. We have decided that they are about 3 weeks about on some things, this being one of them.

We have Lanier's OT/PT this week, I'll post what comes out of that later. Also hoping to get the camera out and upload some pics from their trip to Illinois to see their Great Grandmother.

DVD now available

Well the DVD of the first six months is done. I took the video we shot, some pics and special items we have like the UGA certificates and the White House birth notes and pout them all together into a DVD movie.

I found that in the process that we needed to upgrade our camera, which we have now done. Also in building the DVD, I now know I have to do some more practice before I build the next DVD.

If any family or friends would like a DVD, please drop me an email and I will ship one out to you. If you get a DVD, it may or may not act like a normal DVD as that was one of the issues I had in building the menus. Hopefully I will have that worked out by the time I build the next one.

UGA research study

Well the girls got invited back to do another UGA research study at the Infant Attention Lab. Last time Harlan was the trooper and did well and Lanier was really not into the whole thing. This time Harlan was upset and Lanier did as best she could.

They had to sit in front of a TV and watch some images, they were focusing on eye movements, but after 5 minutes or so, Lanier got bored, while Harlan just got upset. So again we have a reversal of roles.

6 Month Checkup

Well we had our 6th month check up a few days early. Everything is looking good with the little ones and we have been given the go ahead to really start in on the baby food. Our Doctor would like us to be up to 3 feedings a day by the time we come in for our 9th appointment.

Here are some vitals on the babes

Harlan 14lbs 6ozs
Lanier 16lbs 4ozs

Ok sorry for the lack of updates

Well its been a wild month, computer crashes, video editing and baby time, plus work, so I haven't made it around to updating this lately. Well he is a recap of the last month.

  • We have started trying to give them rice cereal. It seems that Harlan is taking to it more than Lanier, but then again, the first time we tried it, Lanier really liked it. So not sure what's up with that.
  • Lanier has now switched places with Harlan, Lanier is now the one wanting to be held 24/7, while Harlan is into her routine a little be better.
  • Tomorrow is our 6 month baby checkup. More shots for the babies. Ouch
  • I'm going to look for a place where I can upload baby videos for those that want to watch. I have edited, but will be re-editing after my computer crash the 0-6 month video. Turns out we thought we had a good video camcorders, but once it is uploaded to DVD it did not meet our standards, so we will be starting their 6 month birthday with a new camcorders.
  • Once I have a site for the videos, scaled down from DVD length, I will post a link here.
  • Harlan is a flipping baby, all she wants to do is flip from back to stomach, although she can't go from stomach to back. Lanier on the other hand, has some issues going from back to stomach, but no issues really going the other way.
  • Both babies are very interested in the balls we got for them. They have rattles and ribbon and they really like to try and grab those. Altoough the one with the ribbon we will have to watch to make sure it doesn't come off.

More tomorrow after the babies check up. Also we have some new pics that I need to upload.

New food for the babies

Well we have finally gotten around to breaking out the rice ceral to see how they like it. Almost all the books and doctors and family and friends have said they will try to push it out, not because of taste but because of the texture.

Well again we have 2 different babies. Lanier seemed to really like it. We had planned on only giving them about 4 baby sppons full of the mixture. Lanier had other ideas and ended up with like 8. She didn't try to push it out, but seemed to gum it and swallow and want more. Harlan on the other hand did the push out over and over. On the last try she did gum it a bit and swallow it, but seemed to do that just to humor us.

We'll try again this evening and a little more each day. After they get the hang of it, we'll bust out some baby veggies.

4 month checkup - update

Mommy pointed out that I did not include the percentiles of the babies when I posted their sizes. So I thought I would go ahead and add them now.

Harlan - 12lbs 10.6ozs (30%), 22 7/8 inches long (estimates), 15 3/4 inches head (30%)
Lanier - 13lbs 11.9ozs (50%), 24 1/8 inches long (estimates), 16 inches head (50%)

We did not include the length, because that is just estimates because all they are really looking for is normal growth. If the baby doesn't want to be measured then the baby draws up their legs and it makes it hard to get a good length.

UGA study

The girls got to take part in a baby study at the university this week. The study was to see how visual attention develops in babies. This involved them watching babies on a TV and then a little playtime. We thought that this was a neat study and decided to take part.

One of the grad students will be doing a study on babies that are 6 months, so if she has her study ready she said she would give us a call to take part in that one.

After the study was done we found out there are really two types of babies, one that can sooth themselves when the playing stops and one that gets upset. We have both. Although Harlan was the calm one and Lanier was the one that got upset. Which is almost the opposite then what we see at home.

Babies 4 month visit

Well the girls went to their 4 month visit this week. So needless to say they were unhappy for a moment when they got their shots. Mommy doesn't do the shots real well so I have to help hold them down. But so far they haven't associated me and shots, because as soon as they are done, I hold them until they stop crying, then hand them off to mommy so that I can do the next one.

The doc says they are looking good and that we can start thinking about introducing rice cereal over the next few weeks and then move on to the veggies.

This is how they came in on the sizes

Harlan - 12lbs 10.6ozs, 22 7/8 inches long (estimates), 15 3/4 inches head
Lanier - 13lbs 11.9ozs, 24 1/8 inches long (estimates), 16 inches head

Talk talk talk

Well the little ones have really chatting things up these days. It seems that all they want to do is talk. They will talk with us, with each other, their hand or a foot. They do seem to like sitting across form each other and making faces back and forth in their new Bumbo seats.

We go next week for their 4 month check up and shots. Should be a fun day for all.

Babies Easter

Well we had our first Easter with the babies. Now there is not a lot our little ones can do at this point so hunting eggs was out of the questions. But grandma did get them Easter baskets with some candy that mommy and daddy have enjoyed. They also got a Bumbo seat each. This is the coolest seat for babies that I have seen. I'll post a picture later this week.

Sorry Daddy has been bad

Well daddy has been bad. I haven't had a chance to update this lately. So I'll see if I can catch everyone up.

  • Lanier's OT/PT appointment went well. She is right on track with all the tests. They gave us some exercises to do with both girls to help them along. The things they told us was things that every parent should be told.
  • Lanier is now starting to really get into the baby talk, much like Harlan has been doing for a few weeks. We have determined that Harlan is about 2-3 weeks ahead of Lanier when it comes to vocal and facial stuff. While Lanier is about 2-3 weeks ahead of Harlan when it comes to the physical aspects of things. Lanier has been holding her head up for weeks, while Harlan is just now getting into that stage.
  • We have some more pics so I'll get them up in a few days.

Getting bigger

This past Friday Dana took the girls in to be weighed so that we could up the dosage of there reflux medicine. The bigger they get the high the dosage.

Harlan 10lbs, 12 ozs
Lanier 11lbs 11ozs

Lanier still has lead in the weight department. With this extra little bit of weight, it has allowed her to take the lead in the tummy time activities. She can really hold her head up and start that crawl thing, altogether she doesn't go anywhere. We are still a ways from her starting to crawl.

Harlan's tummy time seem to consist of sucking on her hand while on her tummy time mat. Although she has made good progress in the last week and is getting the hang of holding her head up

New stuff, sold stuff and learning

Well as we go through the baby and twin experience, we have learned a few things. Now these things may only apply to us since we have twins.
  1. Changing table was a waste. We have done most of our changes in the crib or on the floor.
  2. Must have cradle swings
  3. No time is a good time to give medicine. They don't like it anytime.

Sales

Well Dana has been hitting the baby sales both as a buyer and seller. We had one down the street at a local church. We got some old maternity clothes, baby stuff we thought we would need but didn't, and other items together to sell. We took nearly 75 items and sold all but like 6 items. We also picked up some baby stuff for a good price.

The hair and Lanier

Well we had quite the little scare, or at least it made our hearts race a good bit. We were getting ready to head over to the grandparents house. Dana was dressing the girls and then was going to feed them. I was taking a shower. When I finished my shower, Lanier was screaming up a storm, at first thought it was because momma was dressing Harlan and not paying attention to her. So I went over and picked her up to try and sooth her. Well in the process I happened to notice her hand. She had somehow managed to take a strand of Dana’s hair and wrap it around her finger. It was so tight that the finger was bright red and it was actually drawing a small amount of blood from the underside of the finger.

Well we both jumped into action to try and remove the hair. After a few minutes we were able to get a pair of tweezers under the hair and pop it loose. The second it came loose, Lanier stopped crying and Mom and Dad breathed a sigh of relieve. For a bit there we didn’t think would be able to get it off, because Lanier was not helping much by keeping her hand in a tight ball.

Well after that all was well until that night she tried to do it again, but we caught it before it got tight.

Well apparently Lanier will grow up to be a magician because we can’t figure out how she is managing to wrap that little string of hair so tight. But all is well now and she only has a small mark to show that it had happened.

Mom did better than the Professionals

Here are some pics that mom did. She figured if the professionals can use a bean bag chair and a blanket, then why not her. I say she did rather well with these. She keeps this up, we'll have to upgrade the camera and get some super shots.
